Public transport, job creation,supporting and subsidising business and industry, public school issues ( traffic, funding, etc.), major road maintenance and upgrades are All State government responsibilities. Yet Councils get drawn into attending to these issues through public pressure stemming from State Gov't inaction. Council has a role to play here and that is to support the community on these issues by applying more pressure to the State Gov't for action.Certainly not using ratepayer money to attend to what is State Governments responsibilities.

Councils role in job creation, etc is to not stifle appropriate business and industry during the planning and approval processes.Also, Councils fees and charges need to be reviewed with perhaps a tiered approach to the size and type of business.

The initative of masterplanning all the canelands and flood plains by the cane growers assoc.should be supported. Still rural under the regional plan, now is the time to identify vegetation (fauna and flora) corridors, most appropriate means of lessening flood problems,ensuring water quality,open space and recreation areas, etc., also giving the land holders some form of direction and options into the future.

 

What a great community asset Quanda Lakes could be, possibly similar to Kawana Lakes. The community has expressed interest( through different community/sporting/ environmental groups) in this Council owned water park during Councils tender process. Council should hand it over to the community as a public asset for say 2-5 years and see if they can make a go of it.( eg. Botanical gardens). I'm sure there will still be commercial operators queuing up to lease it after that time if by chance it doesn't work out.

If elected, I will move a motion to that effect asap. But for now Council should put the whole process on hold until after March.

Local Government should concentrate on it's core responsibilities and not encroach onto  State Governments issues.
